Hi,

I am wanting to buy a gaming comp for around $600. I would like to play Flight Sim X on high settings. What do you think you can do for me? My budget doesn't include monitor, keyboard etc...I already have that stuff.

I have to say I am a huge fan of your site. The way you have this site and BYOP is great because it gives me a lot of insight on what type of computer I want to build next. Also being 17 like I am is pretty cool. I actually turned 18 today but who's counting. I just graduated last wednesday and it's a great feeling. I was just wondering what you wanted to do later in life, career wise. I am looking to get into the computer/IT industry myself and was wondering if I could get any feedback on how to get started. It seems that everywhere I apply won't except my application. Anyway this is a long comment but if you could please email me and give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

The only fault with ATI's card are the drivers and getting it to work correctly under load. I've ran several cards, the best card for bang/buck would be the Nvidia 9600, at a nice $130 it beats the 8800GT, however it has a similar problem to the ATi-HD3870 simply because the technology is so bleeding edge. I personally don't see a need to run anything on any of the newest cards, as I have an old ATi-X1650Pro that still plays most games @ 70fps @ medium settings, and sometimes high. Overclocked I can usually get it smokin at a cool 98 solid. It just depends on the budget. If you are building your first computer I would stick with the $650-$800 range. Also look around the net on both Newegg and Tigerdirect to get the most out of you dollar, don't worry about the mail-in rebates they work (I've used them countless times) and you can usually find stuff at computer stores in many towns at a huge discount, plus there isn't shipping to worry over.

As far as the processor, the best chip right now is the Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme, it's priced at $1200 and certainly out of your price range, the next best is a toss up between the Q6600, Q6700 and the AMD Phenom chips. I could care less about performance, price is key. You could research all you want, but to pot on your first build, it's an addiction that you'll have to feed for awhile =P

Antec isn't a decent PSU. But your point is correct, the powersupply is the one thing you can't go cheap on.

Just bought one from HP. Mine was only $1159, with a Q6700 (2.66GHz) included 750GB HD & 64 Bit vista Ultimate. In your list take out the ram (since I'm replacing mine) and the Video card (since I consider that temporary), up your processor, HD, and OS, and see what you come up with. I expect to pay more, but now I don't have to deal with something that's loud and if anything goes wrong I have someone to call, no more mysterious instability issues.. (is it the ram / cpu / mb, RMA cycle).

To each his own.
