Other kinds of computers

For obvious reasons, I tend to focus on personal computers on this blog but that is far from the only type of computer. Embedded computers, such as this used in cellphones and hand-helds are gaining greater market share all the time, with cell phones becoming more able to do things previously reserved for full size computers. The Iphone for example is able to browse the internet relatively well, offering an experience far superior than previous cell phones. This is largely because of the embeded 533 mhz ARM processor, a low power alternative to AMD and Intel chips, and the touch screen which allows the user to more intuitively interface with the computer.
Industrial computing is another area that has seen growth lately, with computer chips being embedded into machines that were previously purely mechanical. Cars are run largely off computer chips these days, and many assembly lines are controlled by chips placed on individual components.
